Serra Takes 5th Place

Serra High School lost only one game and took fifth place in the Coachella Valley baseball tournament, which concluded Thursday.

Serra’s only loss came to Long Beach Edison, 10-0, on Tuesday. Their victories were over El Centro, 12-2; Indio, 6-2; and Coachella Valley, 9-6.

Serra improved to 9-2-1.

During the tournament, senior Jim Lafferty pitched seven innings and gave up only one earned run. He improved to 4-0 as his ERA kept steady at 0.67.

Senior shortstop Mike Bledsoe was named to the all-tournament team. He went eight for 11 (a .727 average), drove in six runs and scored five more. He also had the game-winning hitagainst Coachella Valley, a grand slam in the third inning.

Las Vegas Cowboy Classic

Montgomery posted two victories on the opening day of the tournament and improved to 9-0. The Aztecs beat Brea Olinda, 14-3, and East High of Utah, 9-3. Senior right-hander Mike Wazal (3-0) pitched his third complete game of the season and went three for three with four RBIs at the plate in the opener. Saul Rodriguez was three for three and Armando Mendoza two for two with a two-run homer against Brea Olinda.

In the second game, Montogmery scored eight runs in the first three innings while Ruben Martinez (2-0) allow six hits in seven innings for the victory.

Nonleague games

Rancho Bernardo 9, Hoover 6--Toby Davis delivered a two-run single as the Cardinals (1-6) scored five times in the fourth inning and led. But the Broncos (2-4) came back with four in the sixth and one in the seventh to win it.

Clairemont 14, Santa Fe Christian 1--Craig Goodwin went three for four with a triple while Clairemont (2-5-1) piled up 12 hits. Danny Langford (1-0) pitched five innings for the victory. Santa Fe Christian (1-4) allowed 14 walks in seven innings, walked in four runs and was victimized by two six-run rallies by the Chiefs.

San Diego 9, San Pasqual 5--Carlos Rivera capped a five-run fourth inning for the Cavers (8-1-1) with a two-run single. Jacque Jones was two for four with two RBIs for San Diego, which got a strong six innings from winning pitcher Chino Arreola (3-0). The Golden Eagles fell to 2-4.
