Recent Rains Wreaking Havoc for Baseball Tournament Teams

Last week’s rains have forced area high school baseball teams to scramble to reschedule makeup games, but the precipitation has caused the biggest problems for those involved in tournaments.

The 12-team Babe Herman tournament was scheduled to run through March 26, but the final was not played until last Saturday.

Burroughs, which was on spring break last week, and Highland Hall, which were to meet in a consolation-bracket game, dropped out of the tournament because of the revised schedule.

“A lot of our kids were waiting to go on vacations,” Burroughs Coach Terry Scott said. “They had them planned beforehand. It’s supposed to be a break from school. You have to give them some time to have some fun.”

The eight-team L.A. Baptist tournament, which was to last through Wednesday, was postponed after the first round.

Some second-round games will be played this week, but Harvard and L.A. Baptist will not meet until April 20, if at all.

Campbell Hall, which is in the second week of a two-week break, will not be able to continue in the tournament because of school regulations that prohibit the team from playing or practicing during more than one week of the break, Coach Mark Wagner said.

Glendale, Palmdale, Antelope Valley, Burbank and Saugus never got a chance to play after rains forced the cancellation of the 32-team Pomona tournament.

It was only the third cancellation in 57 years and the first time that the tournament had been rained out since 1964. World War II forced a cancellation in 1944 and the tournament also was rained out in 1957.
