PREP ROUNDUP : Carlson Clears 7 Feet to Tie County High Jump Record

Kevin Carlson of Katella High School tied his Orange County high jump record by clearing 7 feet in a dual meet Thursday against Los Alamitos.

Carlson, a senior, cleared 7 feet on his first attempt and then missed all three tries at 7-2. Carlson broke the previous county record of 6-11 3/4, set by Doug Dreibelbis of Foothill in 1983, at last year’s State meet.

In other Empire League boys’ track and field:

Esperanza 84, Loara 52--Esperanza’s Mark Parlin set a school record in the discus with a toss of 186 feet 2 inches. He held the previous mark of 182-11, set March 23 at the Pasadena Games.

The Orange County record in the event is 210-8, set by Brian Blutreich of Capistrano Valley in 1985. Parlin also won the shotput with a throw of 63-8 1/2.

In Garden Grove League softball:

Kennedy 10, La Quinta 0 (6 innings)--Cheryl Longeway had three hits and three RBIs for visiting Kennedy (12-1, 4-0).

Rancho Alamitos 8, Santiago 2--Visiting Rancho Alamitos (6-8, 3-1) had 15 hits, including four by Jamie Almoradi.

Garden Grove 5, Bolsa Grande 0--Junior Kim Taylor (8-3) pitched a no-hitter with four strikeouts and three walks for visiting Garden Grove (8-4, 4-0).

In Sunset League softball:

Huntington Beach 6, Edison 1--Stefanie Noffsinger of Huntington Beach (6-8, 2-0) had a perfect game going into the sixth inning, but Edison broke it up. She finished with 14 strikeouts.

In nonleague softball:

Brea-Olinda 1, Esperanza 0--Andrea Schuette (4-5) pitched a three-hitter for visiting Brea-Olinda (6-6).

Mission Viejo 2, Mater Dei 1--Kerin Dull, who pitched a four-hitter, struck out 11 and walked one, allowed her first earned run in 70 innings this season for host Mission Viejo (10-5). Dull improved to 8-3.

Capistrano Valley 3, Loara 1--A two-run double by Nevita Khamamkar in the seventh inning gave visiting Capistrano Valley (5-3) the victory.

Foothill 2, Tustin 0--Leeann Gonzalez (5-2) pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts and Melissa Wielendt hit a bases-empty home run for host Foothill (7-2).

In Empire League golf:

El Dorado 205, Katella 251--El Dorado’s Charlie Middleton shot a three-over-par 38 at Western Hills Country Club in Chino Hills.

In Orange League golf:

Western 194, Savanna 199--Tiger Woods shot a two-under par 32 for Western (6-1-1, 2-0) at Dad Miller.

Valencia 207, Brea-Olinda 241--Jack Drey shot a par-37 for host Valencia (6-3, 3-1) at Alta Vista County Club.

In Pacific Coast League golf:

Trabuco Hills 205, Laguna Hills 226--Mark Christensen of Trabuco Hills shot a one-over 37 at Pacific Golf Club.

In Sea View League golf:

Corona del Mar 211, Woodbridge 213--Steve Bemis shot a one-over 37 for Corona del Mar (9-2, 2-1) at Rancho San Joaquin.

In Sunset League golf:

Marina 183, Edison 215--Blake Alban shot an two-under 33 for Marina (7-0, 2-0) at Meadowlark.

Huntington Beach 200, Fountain Valley 227--Dave Shiwota and Scott Gibson each shot a three-over 39 for Huntington Beach (7-0, 1-0) at Sea Cliff.
