Washington D.C. may not have a team yet, but it has a nickname: the Washington Nationals. The nickname was selected by the Metropolitan Washington Baseball from a contest, which drew more than 4,000 submissions and more than 400 different nicknames.
Nationals was the contest’s most popular choice. It was also the nickname of Washington’s National League franchise in 1886. Now, the name will return to Washington if the city is awarded one of the two NL expansion teams that will begin play in 1993.
