School: Laguna Hills High

Sport: Baseball

Position: Pitcher/catcher

Class: Senior

A second-team all-Pacific Coast League outfielder for Laguna Hills last season, Wilkes picked up a couple of new positions--pitcher and catcher--playing summer baseball--and this season it’s unlikely that he will be second to anyone. “Everything he’s doing now, he’s doing for the first time--other than hitting,” Laguna Hills Coach Pete Tereschuk said. “He’s very aggressive, he’s very competitive and he’s a very good athlete.” Tuesday, he pitched a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts in a 7-1 victory over Costa Mesa. He also hit a two-run home run. Friday, in an 8-0 victory over Laguna Beach, Wilkes hit two home runs. After starting the season slowly, with only two hits in his first 14 at-bats, he is batting .444. As a pitcher, he is 2-0 with an 0.35 earned-run average, having allowed only one earned run in 20 innings.

Other top performers:

Kevin Carlson, who equalled his Orange County high jump record by jumping 7-feet 0-inches in Katella’s 100-36 victory over Los Alamitos.

Kimiko Bandy, Jarrett Murrell, Charlie Davidson and Anthoni Davis, who teammed to win four events--the 400, mile, 800, and sprint relays--as Saddleback won the Tustin Relays.
