‘Visitors’ Will Be Right at Home

Technically, El Segundo High will be the visiting team for tonight’s San Fernando Valley League baseball game against Bell-Jeff of Burbank.

For all intents and purposes, though, the Eagles will be right at home.

In an effort to avoid possible gang retaliation, El Segundo and Bell-Jeff will meet for the second time this week at Recreation Park in El Segundo. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

The teams were originally scheduled to play today’s game at Northwest Park in Burbank, Bell-Jeff’s home field. But school officials and police decided it was best to avoid having El Segundo play in Burbank because of a shooting that occurred Feb. 16.

In the shooting, a 17-year-old Burbank boy who was reportedly associated with a San Fernando Valley-based gang was killed following a car chase that started in El Segundo. Jeffrey Dobrovolny, 17, of El Segundo has been charged with murder and other El Segundo students were involved in the chase, police said.

On Wednesday, a softball game between El Segundo and Bell-Jeff was moved from Olive Park in Burbank to El Segundo.

El Segundo’s baseball team defeated Bell Jeff, 10-1, Wednesday night at Recreation Park in its regularly scheduled home game. It was the first league game for the Eagles, who are 13-2 overall.
