Norris to Fight for NABF Title at Country Club

Former North American Boxing Federation heavyweight champion Orlin Norris, whose last scheduled bout was canceled because his opponent failed a neurological examination, will seek to regain the NABF title April 30 when he fights Lionel Washington of Los Angeles at the Country Club in Reseda.

Norris’ planned April 2 bout at the Country Club for the vacant NABF title was scrapped when Mike Hunter failed to pass a state-required neurological exam.

Norris is 28-2 with 14 knockouts. Washington is 11-8.

Alvin Brown, a former basketball standout at Granada Hills High, has signed a national letter of intent with the University of San Francisco.

Brown, a 6-foot-6, 245-pound sophomore forward, averaged 14 points and 10.4 rebounds a game for Columbia (Calif.) College last season, leading the Coast Valley Conference in rebounding.

Kevin Corley, the girls’ soccer coach at Royal High, has been selected to coach the boys’ varsity team next season, replacing Peter Schraml.

Schraml, who led the Highlanders to the 1988 Southern Section 4-A Division title and a 19-4-3 record last winter, resigned because of scheduling conflicts between soccer matches and his job as a pilot with Trans World Airlines.

Corley, who doubles as Royal’s softball coach, led the Highlanders girls’ team to a 21-6-1 record and the quarterfinals of the 4-A Division playoffs last season.

Former Westlake High catcher Mike Lieberthal, who was selected third overall by the Philadelphia Phillies in last year’s amateur baseball draft, has been assigned to Spartanburg, S.C., this season.

Spartanburg competes in the Class-A South Atlantic League and plays a 142-game schedule.

Lieberthal played at the Rookie League level in Martinsville, Va., last season.
