COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Hansen, Saddleback Upend No. 1 Long Beach

Saddleback College, ranked No. 2 in the state in men’s tennis, defeated No. 1 Long Beach, 6-3, in a nonconference match Friday at Saddleback.

Scott Hansen, ranked fifth in the state in singles, beat No. 3 Chan Ly, 6-4, 6-2. Hansen and Steve Saba upset Ly and Jon Imel, the top-ranked doubles team in the state.

Saddleback (16-0) has won the past three state championships. Long Beach is 17-1.

In nonconference baseball:

Fullerton 16, Palomar 6--Frank Sarver had three hits, including two triples, and four RBIs, and Darbi Carmichael had three hits and scored three times. Sal Mancuso had three hits and three RBIs, and Jim Kiefer (1-0) got the victory for Fullerton (21-13). Fullerton scored five runs in the fourth inning and seven runs in the fifth to break it open.

In Orange Empire Conference softball:

Cypress 9, Rancho Santiago 0--Cypress’ victory, coupled with Orange Coast’s loss, gives Cypress sole possession of first place. Nikkanni Andrews had three hits, scored twice and had two RBIs, and Priscella Sarmiento hit a three-run triple in the fifth inning to make the score 7-0 for host Cypress (29-10, 9-2). Cindy Hover (5-0) pitched six innings and allowed only one hit for Cypress.

Fullerton 4, Orange Coast 2--Erika Ostergaard (10-13) pitched a five-hitter and allowed one earned run for host Fullerton (11-16, 8-4). Orange Coast (26-11, 8-3) dropped to second place with the loss.

In South Coast Conference men’s volleyball:

Orange Coast 3, Mt. San Antonio 0--Austin Linford had 10 blocks and six kills for for visiting Orange Coast, which won, 15-4, 15-7, 15-7. Matt Winterburn and Nathan Skiver each had and six kills for OCC (15-3, 11-3).

In Orange Empire Conference men’s swimming:

Rancho Santiago 98, Riverside 86--Matt Grahn won the 200 freestyle (1 minute 57 seconds) and the 500 free (5:15.2), and Liam Murphy won the 50 freestyle (23.8) and the 100 freestyle (52.0) for Rancho Santiago (1-5).

Orange Coast 131, Saddleback 96--The Pirates swept the freestyle events: Jason Bourland won the 50 free in 21.27, Mike Prahm the 100 in 48.18, Mike McNeff the 200 in 1:45.31, Andreas Roestenberg the 500 in 4:36.11 and Tony Harris the 1,000 in 9:46.44. In diving, John Simon of Saddleback won the one-meter (67.45) and the three-meter (189.40).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s swimming:

Grossmont 155, Cypress 110--Cypress’ Shelly Sirott won the 500 freestyle in a school-record time of 5:24.30, and also won the 100 backstroke (1:04.60) and the 100 freestyle (57.06).

Orange Coast 178, Saddleback 101--In times that qualify them for the state championships, Jennifer Sheldon won the 100 backstroke (1:04.67), and the 100 IM (1:04.56) and Gayle Markert won the 50 breaststroke (33:48) as the Pirates (5-0) won their 74th consecutive dual meet.

In Orange Empire Conference golf:

Orange Coast 374, Rancho Santiago 396, Fullerton 403--Ken Calvert shot an even-par 72 and Scott McLeod shot 73 for Orange Coast (14-0) at Western Hills. Jim Melton shot 76 for Fullerton (4-11) and Jim Cheek shot 77 for Rancho Santiago (8-7).
