Dave Immel, a co-captain of the 1987-88 basketball team at UCLA, confirmed Monday that he is among those being considered for the boys’ coaching position at Campbell Hall High.

Immel, 26, who has coached several players on the Campbell Hall roster, said he would welcome the opportunity to try his hand at coaching.

“There comes a time when you need to consider making a change in your career,” said Immel, reached at his mother’s home in Hillsboro, Ore.

Campbell Hall finished 24-5 last season and advanced to the Southern Section Division V-AA championship game. Five starters and several reserves return.

For unspecified reasons, Campbell Hall elected not to renew the contract of Joe Jackson, who led the team to its first winning record in seven seasons of boys’ basketball.

Immel has privately tutored Campbell Hall players Sean Wilder and Taylor Williams, and coached an American Roundball Corp. youth team for which point guard Austin McKellar played.

Immel, who coached the junior varsity last summer at Crespi, is returning to Australia this weekend to play professionally. He played in Australia two seasons ago after failing in two attempts to make an NBA roster.

Don Green will retire at the end of the season, his 21st as the track and cross-country coach at Cal Lutheran, according to a university release.

Kyle Tarpenning, the football team’s defensive coordinator and the assistant women’s track and field coach, will replace Green as the men’s coach.

Green’s retirement will be effective in May after the NAIA championships. Green once led the Kingsmen to 98 consecutive dual-meet victories in track and was twice named NAIA District 3 coach of the year in cross country.

Rob DiMuro has resigned after two seasons as the women’s basketball coach at Pierce College.

In 1989, Di Muro came to Pierce from Alemany High to rebuild a program that had been dormant for four seasons as a result of budget cuts. Last season, he led Pierce to a 21-10 record and into the second round of the state regional playoffs.

“I really fulfilled every hope and dream I had at Pierce,” Di Muro said. “In a very short time we established ourselves.”

Di Muro, who resigned April 11, said he has recommended his assistant, Karrie Parsons, for the job. Di Muro, 26, had a 31-30 career record at Pierce.

Valley College center Roz Linton made a verbal commitment to attend Cal State Northridge. Linton, a 6-foot-1 sophomore from Canoga Park High, averaged 10.7 rebounds per game for the Monarchs, who went 32-5 and finished second in the state tournament.

In other recruiting developments, Chris Jones of Pasadena Community College signed a letter-of-intent with Southern Utah University. Jones, a 6-5 guard from La Canada High, averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds per game this season for Pasadena.

Jeannie Rothman of Westlake High, the runner-up in the 1990 Kinney national cross-country championships, has made a verbal commitment to attend Stanford.

Rothman placed fourth in the 3,200 meters at the 1990 state track and field championships.
