HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : San Marcos’ Huberts Discovers the Perfect Mix of Pitches

Share

The plan was for San Marcos’ Jeff Huberts to throw two or three innings Thursday, then give way to the bullpen. But when Huberts had perfect game going after three innings, San Marcos Coach Ron Layton scrapped the plan.

Huberts is glad he did. The junior right-hander went on to throw a perfect game against host Escondido in a 3-0 victory for eighth-ranked San Marcos.

Huberts (4-0) struck out five and only had two three-ball counts. On both occasions, he wound up with strikeouts. The closest thing to a hit off Huberts came on Chris Ellis’ grounder to the hole, but San Marcos shortstop Brian Calloway threw out Ellis by a step.

“He did a real good job of tying us up and keeping us off-balance,” Escondido Coach Bill Kutzner said. “We didn’t even get real good swings. We only hit a couple of balls hard. He served up a lot of room-service ground balls.”

Layton said Chris Young took his usual jaunt to the bullpen in the sixth inning to loosen up. But Layton said Young came back to the dugout and told him, “I don’t think you’ll need me today, coach.”

“He was ahead of all the hitters,” Layton said of Huberts, who threw only 74 pitches. “He was around the strike zone. He was sneaky fast. He’s not overpowering.”

In 19 2/3 innings, Huberts has allowed only two runs and one walk.

Calloway had two hits and drove in a run for San Marcos (11-3, 6-0). Escondido fell to 5-10, 3-3.
