COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Corson’s No-Hitter Sparks Cypress

Laura Corson pitched a no-hitter and Cypress defeated Riverside, 13-0, in an Orange Empire Conference softball game Friday that was called in the sixth inning because of the mercy rule.

Corson (20-7) struck out six and faced one batter more than the minimum.

Tricia Barr had three hits and three runs batted in and Lisa Hawthorne and Jackie Boxley each had two hits and two RBIs for Cypress (32-10, 11-2 in conference).

In other Orange Empire Conference softball:

Rancho Santiago 3, Fullerton 2 (10 innings)--Latayna Trotter tripled to lead off the bottom of the 10th inning and Tiffany Stanbridge hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Celeste Gordon (9-15) pitched a two-hitter and struck out one for Rancho Santiago (9-17, 3-10).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s swimming:

Orange Coast 129 Rancho Santiago 7--OCC (6-0), which has won 75 consecutive dual meets dating back to February, 1982, won the conference title at Rancho Santiago.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s swimming:

Orange Coast 116, Rancho Santiago 19--Orange Coast (6-0) won the league title at Rancho Santiago. Orange Coast had several swimmers qualify for the state championships: Hayes Drumright in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.95 seconds; Tony Harris in the mile (16:24.19); Rob Wilson in the 200 freestyle (1:46.40); Roger Hughes in the 50 freestyle (21.77) and the 100 freestyle (48.37), and Nate Julson in the 200 individual medley (1:59.45).

Saddleback 121, Grossmont 112--Don Flood won the 200 freestyle (1:49.62) and the 100 freestyle (48.39) for host Saddleback (6-1).
