HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Silvas Paces Montgomery’s Victory

Share

David Silvas was one of the Metro Conference’s brightest newcomers last season, as he helped lead Montgomery to a league championship. As a 5-foot-9 sophomore, Silvas compiled a 9-2 record on the mound.

But through 15 games this season, Silvas had yet to make a pitching appearance for the No. 1 Aztecs. Silvas finally took the mound Friday, and he picked up where he left off in 1990, pitching six innings of a 1-0 shutout over Bonita Vista. Silvas, who complained about a tender elbow early in the year, allowed three hits while striking out three and walking two.

With Silvas back in the rotation, Montgomery appears headed for another Metro title. The Aztecs are now 14-1-1, 7-0 in league.

“It was encouraging to see,” Montgomery Coach Manuel Hermosillo said of Silvas’ performance. “It was his first time out in quite a long time. He was nervous, but he did an outstanding job. He kept us in the game and used his defense. Our pitching corps. got a little extra rest.”

Hermosillo said Silvas’ trouble with his delivery before the season was attributed to an off-season weightlifting program. The Aztecs’ run came with two outs in the bottom of the sixth when Jose Lorenzana singled home Saul Rodriguez (two for three), who had tripled.
