All Six Torero Singles Players Advance

The University of San Diego men’s tennis team advanced all six singles players and three doubles teams to today’s third round of the West Coast Conference Championships at St. Mary’s College in Moraga.

USD and Pepperdine are in a first-place tie with 54 points after Friday’s second round. USD, which is the defending conference champion, drew byes in the first round.

Two rounds will be played today beginning at 8 a.m. The tournament concludes Sunday.

Ricardo Herrera and Joe McDonough’s doubles victory clinched a 5-4 San Diego State victory over 16th-ranked UC Irvine at SDSU. Herrera and McDonough defeated Charles Wheeler and Neel Grover, 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-4.

Singles winners for the Aztecs (17-6) were Kerry Safdie, Chris Numbers and Jeff Belloli. Herrera lost in the No. 1 spot to Mike Roberts, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7). UCI fell to 18-7.

BASEBALL

In the continuation of a game tied 7-7 after nine innings Feb. 16, USD gave up two runs in the top of the 10th and dropped a 9-7 decision to host Loyola Marymount in West Coast Conference action.

USD’s hard luck carried over into the next game, which they lost, 11-5. With a two-run bases-loaded single in the fifth, Darrell Deak rallied LMU from a 5-4 deficit. USD’s Tony Moeder hit a two-run homer in the fourth. USD is 17-25-2, 9-15. LMU improved to 27-17, 17-8.

Wyoming scored eight runs in the seventh and eighth innings en route to a 9-6 victory over San Diego State at Laramie, Wyo. Wyoming’s Mike Eicher hit two home runs. His second was a three-run shot in the Cowboys’ five-run eighth. The second-place Aztecs slipped to 30-11, 8-3; third-place Wyoming is 18-14, 6-6.

Pitcher Mike Whisonant suffered his 30th career loss, one short of the NCAA all-time record, as host U.S. International fell to No. 15 Cal State Northridge, 10-1. The career record for losses was set by Ball State’s Mike Shebek from 1985-88. The Matadors improved to 32-12-1. The Gulls fell to 11-29 in the first of a three-game series.

SOFTBALL

USD expanded its winning streak to nine games and improved to 21-11 with a doubleheader sweep at Cal State San Bernardino. Former Mission Bay High pitcher Tiffany Wasilewski improved to 14-3 with two complete games as the Toreras won, 6-5 and 1-0. Four of USD’s runs were unearned in the opener, as was their run in the nightcap. Angie Straub was two for four in the first game and scored the deciding run. Aimee Reinard produced the only run of the second game when she scored from second base on a throwing error in the fifth inning.
