Servite pitcher Adam Anderson’s hard-luck season continued Saturday in Anaheim, where the Friars lost to Angelus League-leading St. John Bosco, 3-2.

Anderson allowed five hits and one earned run and struck out six, but he gave up a fifth-inning home run to St. John Bosco’s Brad Komadina that proved to be the difference.

Anderson, 1-3 with three no-decisions, gave up a single and a double to the first two batters he faced, and then St. John Bosco (15-3, 7-1) scored two runs on an error.

St. John Bosco took a 3-0 lead in the fifth when Komadina hit his third homer of the season over the right-field fence.

“You couldn’t ask for a better pitched game than Adam threw today,” Servite Coach Mike McNary said. “Bosco is the best hitting team in the league, and he shut them down. What’s amazing is Adam pitched with five stitches in his right thumb.” Servite (9-9, 3-5) spoiled Ed Rizo’s shutout bid with two runs in the sixth. Chris Honikel doubled home one and then scored on a throwing error. Rizo (5-0) allowed four hits.

“We got 19 hits against them Wednesday, and we’re lucky to get five today,” said Tim Ellis, St. John Bosco coach. “We came out well with two hits in the first inning, and then Anderson got tough.”

St. John Bosco moved from the Del Rey to the Angelus League this season, but the switch hasn’t slowed the Braves. St. John Bosco, which won the Del Rey title last year, appears to be headed toward another title with a two-game lead in Angelus play.

In another Angelus League game:

Mater Dei 10, Loyola 5--Host Mater Dei (9-8, 4-3) scored seven runs in the first inning, highlighted by Keith Frankel’s two hits and two runs batted in. Bill Blanton had two hits with a home run and a double and two RBIs. Mike McDonald (2-0) earned the victory in relief, pitching four innings.

In the Pride of the Coast Tournament:

Lynwood 13, Bolsa Grande 6--Tony Truong singled, tripled and homered and had two RBIs and Bill Kercher tripled and had two RBIs for host Bolsa Grande (4-13) in a consolation game. Eric Lizalde had three hits and two RBIs and got the victory by striking out eight and allowing just one hit in four innings of relief for Lynwood (8-8).
