Mission Viejo batters haven’t had much luck against Spaulding this season, but Friday they had no luck at all. Spaulding, who had a two-hit shutout against the Diablos in March, pitched a perfect game in South Coast League action Friday, improving his record to 7-0 and reducing his earned-run average to 0.95. Spaulding’s control approached perfection. Of the 77 pitches he threw, 60 were strikes. Only one batter--Mission Viejo’s No. 9 hitter, who grounded out on a 3-2 pitch in the sixth--managed to work a three-ball count off Spaulding. “He’s got good control,” Dana Hills Coach Bob Canary said. “He’s got good command of his pitches, but that was a little out of the ordinary.”

Other top performers:

Eric Diehl, who was named the swimmer of the meet after setting meet records while winning the 200- (1:38.20) and 500-yard freestyle (4:26.27) races at the Mission Viejo Invitational.

Kyle Evans, who went five for eight with two home runs and seven RBIs for Katella in two victories over Los Alamitos.
