Umpire Larry McCoy broke a bone in his right wrist when he was hit by a line drive in Monday night’s game between the Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees, and returned after missing two innings.

McCoy, the second base umpire, was standing on the grass between the mound and second base when he was struck by Mike Blowers’ liner in the second inning. The ball was ruled dead because it had not yet reached an infielder, and Blowers was credited with a single.

Relief pitcher Mark Davis of the Kansas City Royals was placed on the disabled list and is likely to miss four to six weeks because of a badly damaged fingernail and small fracture on the tip of his left ring finger.

Davis was struck by a ball hit by Mel Hall of the Yankees Friday.

Relief pitcher Rob Dibble of the Cincinnati Reds apologized to Houston’s Eric Yelding for throwing a pitch behind the shortstop’s back, sparking a bench-clearing fight at Riverfront Stadium two weeks ago.

Bill Doran, the Reds’ second-baseman and a former Astro, arranged the 15-minute meeting with Dibble, Yelding and Astro Manager Art Howe before Monday night’s Astros-Reds game at the Astrodome.
