SDSU Earns Top Seed in Softball Tournament

The San Diego State softball team won both rounds of pool play of the Lady Lion Invitational at Penn State Friday and will enter today’s elimination rounds top-seeded.

The Aztecs (19-15-1) defeated Monmouth (N.J.), 4-0, in the first round and Penn State, 4-2, in the second round.

Both Michelle Wesson (8-5), who pitched the first game, and Lisa Perettie (6-3), who threw the second, had perfect games going into the seventh inning.

SDSU (19-15-1) will again meet Monmouth today in the first round of elimination.

BASEBALL

Matt Evans and Tim Florez keyed a nine-hit attack as visiting Grand Canyon took the opener of a three-game series against U.S. International, 7-3. Evans was two for three with two runs, and Florez homered in the sixth to give Grand Canyon a 3-1 lead.

Darrin Forster, a graduate of Santana High, was two for four with a triple and two runs for USIU (12-33). Jeff Matranga (5-9) took the loss.

The doubleheader between San Diego State and BYU was canceled because of snow in Provo. A tripleheader is scheduled for today.

The University of San Diego got solo home runs from Kevin Herde and Devin Bundy but couldn’t overcome St. Mary’s, which scored three runs in the first and fourth innings en route to a 9-4 West Coast Conference victory at Cunningham Stadium. James Ferguson (4-7) took the loss for the Toreros, who fell to 19-27-2, 10-17 in the WCC. The Gaels are 22-21, 16-12.

FOOTBALL

The Chargers’ final preseason game on Sat. Aug. 24 against the Los Angeles Raiders has been rescheduled for Friday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.

Torrey Pines High football Coach Bob Davis announced Thursday he will leave his teaching/coaching position and seek one outside the San Dieguito Union High School District.

Davis’ son Chad, a junior at Torrey Pines, is on pace to break Todd Marinovich’s national career passing yardage record.

Bob Davis was at Torrey Pines one season.

YACHTING

A sailing team from SDSU will oppose USD aboard former 12-meter America’s Cup boats Stars & Stripes ’86 and Heart Of America in the first CocaCola/US-12 Meter Yacht Race, a challenge event in San Diego Bay in May. The race will accompany the Pacific Coast Sailing Championships, May 3-5. In addition to the SDSU-USD challenge, sailing teams from Stanford and California will also race each other aboard the old America’s Cup yachts.
