ROUNDUP : Mission Viejo Errors Help Irvine Win
After three weeks of rainouts and scheduling delays, South Coast League rivals Irvine and Mission Viejo needed three extra innings to decide the championship of the Santa Ana Elks Tournament.
Mark Huffman’s double to left field in the top of the 10th inning gave Irvine a 7-6 victory over Mission Viejo on Saturday at Rancho Santiago College. The Diablos committed six errors, which led to four unearned runs.
Huffman’s third hit of the game came off starting pitcher Greg Parsons, who was reinserted after Jason Bedrosian pitched five shutout innings. Huffman scored Aron Garcia and gave Irvine (13-8-1) the victory.
Irvine reinserted its starting pitcher, Ryan O’Toole, after four strong innings by Bob Ray. O’Toole faced four batters in retiring the side in the bottom of the 10th.
Mission Viejo (8-13), which had 13 hits, tied the score in the seventh. Kurt Neuhausen doubled to left and scored on pinch-hitter Jon Gugel’s hard line drive that deflected off the glove of first baseman Ryan Jones to tie the score at 6.
