PREP ROUNDUP : Wild Pitch in 11th Lets Foothill Beat Canyon in Softball

Kathy Shortall scored on a wild pitch in the top of the 11th as fourth-ranked Foothill defeated Canyon, 5-4, in a Century League softball game Tuesday at Canyon.

Shortall led off the 11th with a single, went to second on a groundout, went to third on Andrea Chamber’s single and scored on a wild pitch by Sara Roberts.

Canyon scored four runs in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead.

Shortall hit a two-run home run in the seventh as Foothill (17-2, 7-0) scored three to tie the score, 4-4.

In Empire League softball:

Katella 2, Los Alamitos 1--Mellissa Benbow singled with one out to score Lori Rossinni with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for Katella (13-5, 7-0).

In Garden Grove League softball:

Pacifica 10, Los Amigos 0 (five innings)--Kristen Varagne, in her first varsity appearance, pitched a no-hitter, walking only one batter in a game at Pacifica shortened by the mercy rule.

Varagne, a sophomore, got the start because Jennifer Surface had minor surgery on the index finger of her pitching hand Monday and backup pitcher Shelly Dunn injured her pitching hand in practice last week.

In Pacific Coast League softball:

Laguna Hills 3, Trabuco Hills 2 (nine innings)--Christy Journell beat the throw to the plate from right field on a hit-and-run single by Alycia Stevens in the bottom of the ninth inning for Laguna Hills (12-6, 6-1), which moved into a tie for first place with Trabuco Hills (6-1 in league) with three games remaining.

In Sunset League softball:

Ocean View 3, Marina 2 (8 innings)--Jenna Sansone hit a two-run home run in the third inning and Tami Dowlin hit a home run to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning for Ocean View (12-6, 5-5).

In nonleague softball:

Irvine 3, Mater Dei 2 (eight innings)--Rebecca Smith drove in Shelley Byrd with a single in the bottom of the eighth for No. 4 Irvine (21-2). Byrdscored all of Irvine’s runs.

In Sunset League golf:

Marina 370, Huntington Beach 370 (18 holes)--For the second consecutive time, Marina defeated Huntington Beach in a playoff after the teams were tied after 18 holes. The Vikings (17-0, 9-0) won by two strokes in the second hole of a playoff at Meadowlark. Paul Ohshima shot even-par 70.
