PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Morales Pitches a One-Hitter as Santa Ana Upsets No.2 Fountain Valley

John Morales gave up one hit--an infield single in the fourth inning--as Santa Ana upset No. 2-ranked Fountain Valley, 4-0, in a Sunset League game Friday at Fountain Valley.

Fountain Valley fell to 20-5, 8-2 in league play. Santa Ana is 11-10 and 4-7.

Leo Arroyo went three for three, including a double, and drove in a run for Santa Ana.

In other Sunset League games:

Edison 12, Marina 3--Shawn Allbee (4-3) pitched five innings, allowed three hits, struck out six and walked two for host Edison (13-11, 5-6). Darren Brink had four hits with two doubles and two RBIs for Edison.

In the Century League:

El Modena 5, Santa Ana Valley 3--El Modena (14-6, 11-2) scored four in the top of the seventh to win. Jay McGrath hit a run-scoring double to tie the score and Steve Edminsten singled home McGrath for the winning run. Darren Knutson (5-0) picked up the victory and Dan White pitched a hitless seventh for the save.

Canyon 10, Foothill 3--Jeff Brunswig had a home run and single and three RBIs and Brad Shuckhart had three hits, a run scored and an RBI as Canyon (13-9-1, 7-6) won at Foothill. Mike Casagrande (4-4) allowed seven hits in seven innings for Canyon. David Trentine and Rob Higby had two hits and an RBI each for Foothill (9-12, 7-6).

In the Garden Grove League:

Santiago 9, Kennedy 8--Santiago clinched at least a tie for the league title by scoring four runs on four hits in the fifth inning to take a 9-7 lead. Enele Scanlan, Jamie Estrada and Balfred Guzman each had two hits and Scott McGarrh hit a two-run home run in the third inning for Santiago (18-6, 11-1). Robert Leon pitched five innings of relief, allowing one run and striking out three, for the victory.

La Quinta 7, Bolsa Grande 3--Anthony Beltran had three hits, including a grand slam with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, to give La Quinta (19-6, 9-3) the victory. Brett Osborn (8-2) struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings for the victory. 4

Los Amigos 4, Rancho Alamitos 1--Bill Speer (3-5) pitched a five-hitter and allowed only an unearned run in the victory at home for Los Amigos (7-12, 4-8). Joe Portillo had a three-run home run and Ryan Wise had a bases-empty home run for Los Amigos.

Garden Grove 5, Pacifica 4 (eight innings)--Sophomore Gary Henson doubled to score Simon Funtes from second with the winning run in the eighth for host Garden Grove (11-8, 8-4). Joe Aguirre (5-3) pitched eight innings for the victory. He had 14 strikeouts and didn’t allow a run after Pacifica scored four runs, two earned, in the first.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 15, Capistrano Valley Christian 1--Matt Hendren (6-4) pitched a two-hitter and struck out 14 for visiting Orange Lutheran (14-7, 8-4). Phil Matheson had three hits and six RBIs, J.P. Presley had four hits, including a triple, and three RBIs and Mic Buehler had four hits, including a triple and a double, and two RBIs for Orange Lutheran, which had 21 hits.

Brethren 5, Whittier Christian 2--Jeff Zabel’s two-run single in the bottom of the first gave host Brethren a 4-0 lead. David Kogler added two hits and batted in two runs for Brethren (9-6, 6-6). Pitcher Brandon Stott (4-2) went the distance for the victory.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 5, Western 3--Ryan Roskelly had three hits, three stolen bases and an RBI, and Craig Irion had three hits and an RBI for visiting Valencia (10-10, 7-6).

Magnolia 8, Brea-Olinda 1--Tony Treul led off the game with a home run, Jason Corder had an RBI single and John Sharp had two hits and two RBIs for visiting Magnolia (11-9, 8-5). Jesse Caron (7-3) pitched six innings, striking out six and allowing four hits for the victory.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Trabuco Hills 4, Estancia 1--Jeff Beckley (5-2) pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts for visiting Trabuco Hills (10-10, 7-6) in the upset of first-place Estancia. Gibson Gomez had two hits and an RBI and Andy Kerr had two hits and an RBI for Trabuco Hills.

Laguna Hills 10, Costa Mesa 5--Dave Corgrove hit a two-run home run and Jason Pierson followed with another home run for host Laguna Hills (13-11, 9-4), which moved into a first-place tie with Estancia. Matt Maffei had three hits and scored two runs and Scott Dowd (1-1) pitched six-plus innings for the victory.

Laguna Beach 5, Century 4--Jason Levinson hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to give host Laguna Beach a 5-1 lead. It was Levinson’s seventh home run of the season. Tom Ravensberg (3-4) picked up the victory for Laguna Beach (7-13-1, 6-7). Century is 5-8 in league.

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 4, San Clemente 2--Dana Hills clinched the league championship for the first time since 1980. Jon Spaulding (9-0) pitched a six-hitter, struck out four and walked one for Dana Hills. Ryan O’Leary had three hits, including a double, and scored and Keith Barnett had two hits and two RBIs for visiting Dana Hills (18-6, 10-3).

El Toro 6, Mission Viejo 4--Visiting El Toro (13-11, 7-6) scored six runs in the sixth to win it. Dave Owens and Rob Johnson each had two-run home runs for in the inning for El Toro. Owens had four hits and two RBIs, Sal Schacter had three hits and two RBIs and Chris Wiggins had two hits and three steals. Tim Snowden had two hits for Mission Viejo (9-13, 4-9).
