A San Diego police detective shot a pit bull terrier in the back Tuesday night when it attacked him as he tried to arrest a woman on the San Diego Police Department’s 10 Most-Wanted list.

Jerry Berner, a member of the Fugitive Apprehension Unit, was bitten once on the hand before he shot the dog at about 9 p.m., police said.

Berner was outside the home of Regina Comaduran, 31, also known as Loretta Santos or Regina Carter, in the 2700 block of 16th Street in National City.

Police officers chased the pit bull down the street after it was shot. The dog was captured and turned over to National City animal control officers.

Comaduran had been wanted since September, 1990, for alleged possession of explosives, possession of a firearm and possession of methamphetamine for sale, said police spokesman Bill Robinson.
