COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cypress Defeats Ventura for Record 41st Victory

Cypress set a single-season school record for victories with 41 by defeating Ventura, 6-0, in a Southern California regional softball game Friday at Cypress.

Cypress (41-10) needs to beat Ventura again today to advance to the State tournament for the third consecutive season under Coach Brad Pickler. Cypress was 40-8 last season.

Laura Corson (25-7) pitched a one-hitter, striking out four and walking two, for Cypress. Corson was the Orange Empire Conference pitcher of the year.

Pricsella Sarmiento had two hits, scored twice and had one run batted in for Cypress (41-10). Ventura is 24-14.

In another regional game:

Fullerton 3, Orange Coast 0--Visiting Fullerton (15-20) upset Orange Coast behind an eight-hitter by pitcher Erika Ostergaard (14-17). Orange Coast had 11 baserunners but left eight, had one thrown out at second and two thrown out at the plate.

Alisha Nelson (21-8) took the loss for OCC (33-14). Kristen Schima of Fullerton became the first player to hit a ball over the fence at OCC this season when she hit a home run in the seventh.

The series continues today at noon at OCC.

In the Southern California Regional men’s tennis tournament:

Hansen advances--Scott Hansen of Saddleback moved into the semifinals at Riverside. Hansen defeated Kevin Askvig of Grossmont, 6-1, 6-3, in the third round Friday, then beat Jeff Spalinger of Santa Barbara, 6-2, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. Hansen plays Bill Terry of Bakersfield at 9 a.m. today in the semifinals.
