HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : USDHS Rallies for Big Win Over La Jolla

Ian Hamilton came within a couple of batters of being chased from the game, but he overcame a rocky first inning and helped USDHS to a 19-5 City Western League victory Friday over La Jolla.

USDHS scored four runs in the first inning, then watched the lead disappear in the bottom of the inning as Hamilton hit the first two batters, walked the third and then served up Craig Woodall’s grand slam.

Hamilton finished the game with a four-hitter. He struck out nine, walked four and hit three.

Seven of USDHS’ first eight runs were unearned, and La Jolla (12-10, 3-8) committed seven errors in the game.

Junior Chris Richard went four for five, scored twice and drove in six runs for USDHS (16-9, 7-3). The game’s key hit belonged to Jeff Moore, a three-run triple in the sixth inning to blow the game open. Moore also scored four times.

City Central League

Madison 10 San Diego 2--Mike Jones pitched a three-hitter and struck out 10 for Madison (11-9, 8-2), which is two games ahead of San Diego (15-8-1, 6-4) with two to play. Brian Delgado had three hits, including a three-run double in the first. Robbie Hoffman had three hits, a homer and two RBIs, and Jesus Martinez had four hits with three RBIs.

Hoover 11, Crawford 6--The Cardinals (6-16, 5-6) won their fifth in a row with an 11-hit attack over Crawford (9-15, 5-6). Tony Banks led Hoover with three hits.

City Eastern League

Patrick Henry 3, Serra 2--Zedrick Martin hit a two-out, full-count pitch over the left-field fence in the top of the eighth inning to lift Patrick Henry (10-10, 8-3), which swept the three-game series against Serra (14-13-1, 2-8). Henry’s Jeff Williams homered and pitcher Robbie Coe (3-2) went the distance.

Mira Mesa 6, Point Loma 0--Brendan Hause (6-1) pitched a two-hitter and struck out five as fourth-ranked Mira Mesa (22-4-1, 9-1) clinched a share of the league title. Karl Goins had a two-run single in the second inning and added another in the third. Point Loma is 12-13, 5-5.

City Harbor League

Clairemont 10, Coronado 5--Clairemont (11-10-1, 5-5) pulled into a third-place tie with Coronado (8-11, 5-5) as Craig Goodwin, Josh Severson and Kevin Connelly had two RBIs apiece.

Metro Conference

Castle Park 3, Montgomery 1--Second-ranked Montgomery (19-3-1, 11-2) backed into the conference title, its second straight, with Chula Vista’s loss. County strikeout leader Benji Gil (7-3) pitched a three-hitter and struck out seven. He also drove in a run in a three-run third inning. Mark Vega also had an RBI. Seventh-ranked Castle Park (17-7, 8-4) plays Chula Vista Monday for second-place and an automatic playoff berth.

Hilltop 3, Chula Vista 1--Hilltop’s Nathan Dighera’s two-run triple completed a three-run first inning rally. Hilltop is 10-9-2, 5-7-1, Chula Vista 13-10, 8-4.

Mar Vista 7, Southwest 6--The Raiders (5-13, 3-10) wasted Rafael Padillo’s two triples and Junior Moran’s homer and double. Mar Vista (9-11-1, 4-9) got a three-run double from Saul Godinez to overcome a 5-4 deficit.

Sweetwater 3, Bonita Vista 2--Paul Wapnowski singled through the middle with a drawn-in infield to score Fernando Rodriguez from third base to win it in the bottom of the seventh. Rodriguez doubled to open the inning off losing pitcher Randy Robinson, then Danny Mireles, who got the victory in relief, advanced Rodriguez to third with a fly ball. Sweetwater is 10-9-1, 7-6, Bonita Vista is 4-13-1, 4-8-1.

1-A Desert League

Imperial 4, Calipatria 3--Winning pitcher Michael Pena (3-3) had three hits, scored a run, drove in another and stole two bases as Imperial (11-3-1, 5-1) clinched its second consecutive league title. Calipatria is 3-13, 0-5.
