ROUNDUP : Ventura Falls to Cypress in Softball Regional, 3-2

Cypress College rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning Saturday and beat Ventura, 3-2, in the second round of the Southern California regional softball playoffs at Cypress.

Cypress (42-10), designated as the visiting team, won the series, 2-0, and advanced to the state tournament for the third consecutive season.

Ventura (24-14) scored a pair of runs in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Pricsella Sarmiento started the seventh with a triple to right-center. Jackie Boxley walked and stole second, then Laura Corson walked to load the bases.

After a fly out, Collene Conahan singled up the middle to to tie the score, 2-2. Stefanie Hill grounded into a force play to score Boxley with the go-ahead run.

Karrie Swartz (8-3) retired Ventura in order in the seventh to complete a three-hitter. Jennifer Cabral (12-7) went seven innings, but took the loss for Ventura.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Hueneme 6, Rio Mesa 1--Richard Hernandez was three for three and Frank Adame (9-2) allowed just two hits and struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings to lead Hueneme (17-7) to the championship of the Westside tournament’s Blue Division.

Casey Bolen had two hits and stole two bases and Chris Baker and Jose Reyes each had two hits for Hueneme.

Rio Mesa (17-7), which clinched its second consecutive Channel League title Friday, played without many of its regular starters, including shortstop Dmitri Young.

COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD

NAIA District 3 Championships--Cal Lutheran’s Pam Beaver finished second in the women’s heptathlon with 4,199 points and led the Regals to a third-place finish at Santa Barbara City College.

Cal Lutheran’s Darren Bernard won the men’s 400 meters (46.69) and was second in the 200 (22.31). The Master’s Andy Yaeger was second in the 10,000 (31:53.94).

Beaver was second in the high jump (5 feet 2), long jump (16-2) and third in the javelin (91-10) and 800 (2:26.34).

COLLEGE TENNIS

NAIA District 3 Championships--The Cal Lutheran women’s tennis team finished third with eight points.

Westmont ran away with the title, scoring 20 points and winning by the largest margin in District 3 history. Pt. Loma Nazarene College, the defending District 3 champion, finished second with 12 points.

CLU edged Cal Baptist, which finished fourth with seven points.

Westmont advances to the NAIA national tournament in Overland Park, Kan., on May 20-25.
