Former Glendale College Pair to Play for CS San Bernardino

Chris Cooke and Gary Fowler, former Glendale College basketball players, have signed letters of intent to play basketball for Cal State San Bernardino.

Cooke, a 6-foot-9 sophomore center from Grant High, averaged 11.6 points and 6.7 rebounds, had a team-high 70 blocked shots and shot 51% from the field for Glendale during the 1990-91 season.

Fowler, a 6-5 forward from Pasadena Muir, averaged 16.8 points and 8.0 rebounds during the 1989-90 season.

Jeff Barrett, a quarterback from Santa Monica City College and Burroughs High, said he will attend Brown University.

Barrett, a junior college Academic All-American, said he will enroll at Brown, his top choice, in the fall. Barrett set 11 school records in two seasons at Santa Monica and redshirted his freshman year at Nevada Reno.

Rio Mesa junior Ben Pecht qualified for automatic All-American swimmer status with his first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly in the Southern Section 4-A swimming finals last Friday at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Pecht’s time of 50.39 seconds puts the 16-year-old among the top 25 swimmers in the nation. Pecht also qualified for automatic All-American status with his third-place time of 1:52.41 in the 200-yard individual medley.

Junior Ben Swartout, also from Rio Mesa, timed 4:31.85 and placed second in the 500-yard freestyle. He qualifies for All-American consideration.

Cal Lutheran softball player Brenda Frafjord, a junior outfielder, has been named a second-team NAIA All-American.
