Martinwas fast Friday--faster than any other high school sprinter in Orange County history. But that didn’t help him get to his prom on time. The dance in La Jolla started at 7 p.m., about 40 minutes before Martin set the county 100-meter record at the Southern Section 4-A championships at Cerritos College. Finishing second to Ricky Carrigan of Compton, Martin’s time of 10.56 seconds broke the record of 10.57 set by Santa Ana Valley’s Elliott Dunning in 1984. “At about the 70-meter mark I saw (Carrigan’s) strides were longer than mine,” Martin said. “I tried to match his strides but that wasn’t happening.” Martin also ran a personal-best time of 21.50 in the 200, finishing third to Carrigan and Compton’s Edward Hervey. After his record-setting 100, he drove home, showered, donned his tuxedo, picked up his date in Oceanside and arrived in La Jolla at about 11 p.m. The dance ended at midnight. Enough time for a few fast moves on the dance floor.
