Small Plane Lands in Field; 2 Aboard Unhurt
A pilot and his passenger escaped injury Monday when their small airplane made a precautionary landing on a vacant field in Rolling Hills Estates, just south of the Torrance Municipal Airport.
Pilot Ronald Meister of Hillsborough, Calif., and Timothy Saunders of Goleta were on a flight from Palm Springs to Santa Barbara when gauges aboard their single-engine Piper Warrior indicated--apparently falsely--that the plane was out of fuel, according to Capt. John Conley of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Meister opted to set down immediately and landed on an old landfill about 5 p.m., Conley said. The four-seat plane suffered a bent propeller and damage to its landing gear.
