After 36 holes and more than eight hours of golf, Tiger Woods, 15, cared less about where he finished in the CIF-Southern California Golf Assn. Championship than simply getting finished.

But a weary and sore Woods was more than a match for his competition at Marbella Golf and Country Club in San Juan Capistrano, and the Western freshman won the individual title Monday. He finished 10 strokes ahead of runner-up Joe Acosta of Visalia Redwood to become the first player to win both the Southern Section and CIF-SCGA individual titles in a season.

It was the seventh consecutive day Woods had played tournament golf, and after his second round he slumped in a golf cart. He said he will be taking the rest of the week off to take final examinations at Western before embarking on a summer schedule that he expects to include playing in the U.S. Amateur.

“I guess you could say I’m tournament tough,” Woods said. “I made the putts I had to make today.”

The victory margin is the largest in the 21-year history of the tournament, which matches the top high school golfers in the Central, Los Angeles City, San Diego and Southern sections. The next best was a six-stroke victory by Kevin Leach of Rolling Hills in 1983.

Woods shot one-over-par 71 in the morning qualifying round and trailed Matt Todd of Redwood by a stroke, but then had a three-under 67, the lowest score of the day.

He had four birdies and a bogey for a 32 on his first nine--the back nine at hilly Marbella--and a birdie and a bogey on his second nine for a 35.

Last week Woods finished fifth at the USF&G; Junior golf tournament in New Orleans. Saturday and Sunday he teammed with Eddy Lee of Corona High to win a junior four-ball championship for the second consecutive year.

Palm Springs won the team title. In the 18-hole girls tournament, Betty Chen of Palm Desert defeated classmate April Packham in a playoff.
