SPORTSCOPE : Raider Coach to Speak at Palos Verdes Banquet

Raider Coach Art Shell will be the guest speaker Friday night at the final Palos Verdes High Athlete of the Year awards banquet at the Palos Verdes Country Club.

The student bodies of Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills and Miraleste high schools will consolidate next fall to form Palos Verdes Peninsula High on the present Rolling Hills campus.

Senior athletes being honored are: David Bohner (football), Kaaren Iverson (girls’ volleyball), Melanie Fountain (girls’ tennis), Jennifer Molter (girls’ soccer), Chris McAllister (water polo and swimming), Karen Zareski (girls’ cross-country), Tim King (boys’ soccer), Mollie Tobias (swimming), David Graeler (baseball), Hitoshi Ono (track and field), Arron Marlowe-Rogers (boys’ cross-country), Anthony Kordich (boys’ basketball), Melisa Levinthal (softball), Misty Folsom (girls’ basketball), Mark Edler (boys’ volleyball), Troy Saito (golf), Susan Coyner (track and field) and Jeff Gould (boys’ tennis).

Two South Bay girls will represent the Southland in national and international soccer action this summer.

Jessica Reifer, who was the CIF 3-A Division offensive player of the year last season at Torrance High, was selected to the U.S. Youth Soccer Assn. Olympic Development Under-19 regional pool. That qualifies her to attend a July camp in Colorado for possible selection to the West regional team.

Dena Tornez of Gardena was selected to play for the East-West Soccer Ambassadors on a tour of The Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Italy in July. In Europe the U.S. team, for youths 11 through 13, will have a week-long training clinic, then will compete in the Upper Austria Cup and the Italy Cup.

Bomani Parker will fight Ramzi Hassan in a scheduled 12-round bout for the vacant World Boxing Council Intercontinental light heavyweight title Monday night at the Forum.

Parker is 12-1 with eight knockouts and Hassan is 30-5 with seven KOs.

In scheduled 10-round co-features, former two-time World Boxing Assn. champion Louie Espinoza (40-4-1, 34 KOs) opposes Moises Urbina (17-3) in a featherweight bout and Fidel Avendano (30-1, 21 KOs) meet Bryant Paden (14-6-3, five KOs) in a lightweight bout.

Preliminary bouts start at 7 p.m.

Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos of Pacific Palisades defeated Brent Frohoff and Scott Ayakatubby of Hermosa Beach, 15-8, to win a pro beach volleyball event last weekend in Boulder, Colo.

The women’s tour was scheduled to stop in Dallas last weekend, but the event was canceled when the promoter withdrew.

The men’s tour stops in Philadelphia and this week. The women will play in Santa Cruz.
