Gavin Millay of USDHS and Marc Nielsen of Mira Mesa will play in the six-team Sun Belt Classic all-star baseball series, which begins today in Stillwater, Okla.

Benji Gil of Castle Park and Mike Bovee of Mira Mesa were also selected to play for the California team, but will not.

Bovee, drafted earlier this month by the Kansas City Royals, signed a contract and is preparing for his minor-league assignment.

Gil, the 19th player taken in the first round, has two final exams today and graduation ceremonies on Thursday. Gil says he is still undecided whether he will sign with the Texas Rangers or play at the University of Miami.

In addition to California, all-star teams from Oklahoma, Florida, Ohio, Georgia and Maryland will compete at Allie Reynolds Stadium on the campus of Oklahoma State. The final is Sunday. Georgia is the defending champion. California had won 10 of the previous 13 series.

Grossmont High, which won its second consecutive San Diego Section 2-A baseball championship, is ranked No. 6 in the nation by USA Today. The Foothillers, second in the final rankings last year, will likely finish sixth since every team ahead of them is finished.

Mira Mesa, which was No. 2 earlier in the year, is ranked 23rd with two teams ahead of the Marauders still playing.

Brett Castillo, a wrestler from San Pasqual High, was one of 10 finalists for the 1990-91 CIF boys Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Greg Siwek of Cupertino Monte Vista High won the boys’ award, Erin Pyka of El Toro High earned the girls’ honor.

Herb Meyer of El Camino High was named the San Diego Section athletic director of the year by the California State Athletic Directors Assn.
