Eleven Area Baseball Players Are Honored

Four players from El Segundo High and three from Torrance lead a group of 11 South Bay players named to All-Southern Section baseball teams by the First Interstate Bank-Amateur Athletic Foundation board of sportswriters.

Torrance placed two players on the 4-A Division first team--junior catcher Jason Kendall and senior third baseman Antone Williamson, a three-time All-CIF selection.

Named to the 4-A second team were Rolling Hills senior pitcher Kirt Kishita and Torrance senior outfielder Eric Gonzales. South Torrance senior shortstop David Rosato was chosen to the third team.

Senior infielder Dmitri Young of Rio Mesa High in Oxnard was named 4-A player of the year. Young, the fourth player taken overall in the free-agent draft by the St. Louis Cardinals, is the state record-holder for career hits.

El Segundo is represented by four players on the 3-A Division squad. Junior catcher Jeff Poor and senior shortstop Brett Newell were named to the first team, junior outfielder Chris Feeny was a second-team choice and senior pitcher Brian Wise was selected to the third team.

Senior pitcher Mike Hernandez (10-0) of division champion Ontario was named 3-A player of the year.

Two area players were selected to the 2-A Division first team--Mary Star pitcher-outfielder Mark Ponce De Leon and Miraleste shortstop Mike Ryan.

Yucaipa pitcher Tyrone Hill (11-1) was named 2-A player of the year.
