Jonathan Campbell shrugged Saturday as he looked around the baseball field at Cal State Northridge, which was full of high school all-stars from throughout the region. His peers, whether he believed it or not.

Sure, Campbell’s performance in the 15th Bernie Milligan all-star game was outstanding. But considering his present company, he maintained that it was nothing to crow about.

“Today was a good day for me,” said Campbell, a senior outfielder from Poly High. “But every day is a good day for all of these guys.”

Sorry, but if that was the case, the game’s most valuable player award would be hanging on someone else’s wall, not Campbell’s.

Campbell had three hits, drove in four runs and scored the game-winning run as the East came from behind to beat the West, 6-5, to record its sixth consecutive victory and eighth in the past nine years.

For Campbell, who will play both football and baseball next season at Northridge, it was a jump start on what should be four years of personal highlights.

“I was hoping to start some good memories here,” said Campbell, who was making his first appearance at Matador Field.

Campbell, who was an All-City Section selection in both baseball and football, stole the thunder of another dual-sport star. Granada Hills’ Bryan Martin, who will attend Weber State on a football scholarship, had two singles for the West, reached base four times, stole a base, pitched two scoreless innings of relief and seemed to have the MVP plaque in his sights.

Martin played three positions (designated-hitter, center field, pitcher) and was in line to earn the victory when the West broke a 3-3 tie by scoring twice in the seventh.

Yet the East hammered reliever Sean Boldt of El Camino Real in the eighth, with relief pitcher Mike Rossiter of Burbank sparking the rally with a leadoff double over the head of Martin, who was playing very shallow in center field.

“He got to a 3-1 count and he had to throw me a strike, so I was sitting on the fastball and that’s what I got,” said Rossiter, who did not allow an earned run in three innings of relief to earn the victory.

Soon thereafter, the East was sitting on a lead. Chris Tampoya of Palmdale grounded to Boldt, who turned and unsuccessfully tried to pick Rossiter off at second. Raul Torres of Poly forced Rossiter at third on a sacrifice-bunt attempt, setting the stage for Campbell.

Campbell ripped a liner into the gap in right-center to drive in two runs to tie the score, 5-5. David Rojas of San Fernando, who drove in the game-winning run in the Tigers’ final at-bat of a 3-2 victory over Banning in the City Section 4-A Division final last month, singled to right to score Campbell with what proved to be the game-winning run.

“I knew we had the bats in the lineup to get even,” Campbell said.

Campbell evened the score and then some earlier in the game. Campbell gave the East a 2-1 lead in the fifth when he singled home Art Tarin of San Fernando and Torres, then scored all the way from first on a double by Notre Dame’s Vinnie Orlando.

Jason Cash of Newbury Park tied the score, 3-3, with a two-run single in the sixth off Saugus right-hander Doug Maggiora, who also ran into trouble in the seventh. Maggiora was relieved by Rossiter after yielding a walk to Mike Muncy of Camarillo and a single by Chatsworth’s Adam Pearlman. Brian Vasey of Simi Valley drove in Muncy with a chopper over the head of shortstop Willie Rivera of Burbank. Vasey stole second and scored when a grounder by Martin went through Rivera’s legs for an error and a 5-3 West lead.
