GOLF ROUNDUP : Galbraith Top Qualifier in the State Amateur

Sandy Galbraith of Fountain Valley shot a three-over-par 75 Tuesday to earn medalist honors in the qualifying segment of the California Golf Assn.’s Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach.
Galbraith, 45, had a two-day total of 145, one shot ahead of Bryan Pemberton of Pleasanton and Mark Sear of San Jose.
The 32 golfers with lowest scores after the two rounds over Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill advanced to the match-play portion, which begins today with two rounds at Pebble Beach. A 36-hole final is scheduled Friday.
Tiger Woods, 15, of Cypress and Western High School, is in a tie for second at the Mission Hills Desert Junior tournament after shooting a 72 at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage.
Ted Purdy of Scottsdale, Ariz., shot 71 to lead Woods and Larry Alford of Houston. Richard Son, who graduated this month from Sunny Hills High, is three shots back with a 74.
Ben Garner, a sophomore at El Toro High, had a 74 to lead the boys’ 13-14 division.
In the girls’ division, Kellee Booth of Coto de Caza and Santa Margarita High, shot an 80 and is tied for fifth, nine strokes behind Emilee Klein of Studio City.
The final two rounds of the 54-hole American Junior Golf Assn. event are scheduled today and Thursday.
