SPORTSCOPE : Prep Senior All-Star Football Classic Set for July 27 in Culver City

The 15th Annual Los Angeles Prep Senior Bowl All-Star Football Classic will be July 27 at Culver City High.

Dorsey High graduate and University of Colorado-bound running back Lamont Warren, the 1990 L.A. City player of the year, heads the South-West squad. The team is coached by Gene Zeller, head coach at Blair High in Pasadena, and includes standouts Mario Mattison from Fairfax and Walter Grissam from Westchester.

Lou Lichti, head coach at Culver City, will coach the North-East squad, which includes Locke running back Antoine Redmond.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for high school students with a current school ID and $2 for children under 12, and will be available at the stadium box office on game night. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds go to community youth programs.

The Santa Monica Open Wheelchair Tennis Tournament will be July 27-28 at the Santa Monica College Tennis Courts. All proceeds will go to the Neurological Recovery Foundation, a nonprofit organization.

Fifty to 60 of the top men and women wheelchair tennis players are expected to participate.

The Society of Experimental Dart Players holds weekly dart tournaments every Tuesday evening at the King’s Head British Pub and Restaurant at 116 Santa Monica Blvd. The tournament is free and open to all. Interested parties should call either Lamont Carr or John Crowther at 451-1402.

Nick Braven, a 1988 honors graduate of Hamilton High, won the men’s foil title at the U.S. National Fencing Championship in St. Charles, Ill., to earn a place on the five-man team that will represent the United States in the Pan American games later this month in Havana, Cuba.

Braven, 20, is in Sheffield, England, through July 25, participating in the World University Games. A senior at Stanford University, he was the 1990 NCAA men’s foil champion, the 1989 NCAA Western Regional champion and the Pac-10 Conference champion in 1989 and 1990. He was also Stanford’s sophomore athlete of the year in 1990.

Braven won gold medals in the men’s foil competitions at the 1989 and 1990 U.S. Olympic Festivals.

Norm Duncan, a member of the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame, died July 10. He was 82.

Duncan was a three-year letterman in football, 1929-1931. He was named an All-Coast fullback in 1931 and was also the 1931 Pacific Coast light-heavyweight boxing champion and a two-year hockey starter. He also served as an assistant football coach and helped coach hockey and boxing.

Duncan, a 32-year employee of UCLA, helped plan the construction and design of Pauley Pavilion. He also headed the UCLA physical education department and, until his retirement in 1972, directed the operation of all athletic facilities.

Duncan was also a National Football League official for 15 years.

He received his bachelor’s degree from UCLA in 1932 and a master’s degree in 1939.
