Steve Shaw is expected to resign as the Redondo High boys’ basketball coach to become the top assistant under El Camino College basketball Coach Paul Landreaux, according to sources.

Shaw said he has applied for the El Camino assistant’s job and expects to learn sometime in August whether he is selected. The job remains open until July 31, he said.

“El Camino has always been in my blood,” said the 6-foot-9 Shaw, a former center for the Warriors. “I’ve always had the thought that it would be a great place to coach.”

Landreaux, who is returning to El Camino this season after coaching at St. Mary’s College, said the assistant’s position has not been officially filled.

“I can’t tell you too much about it,” he said. “I know (Shaw) applied for it along with a lot of other guys. He’s someone we’re certainly going to consider.”

Sources, however, said Shaw is almost certain to be selected. A graduate of Aviation High, he has coached at Redondo for six years, guiding the Sea Hawks to four berths in the Southern Section playoffs. Redondo was 15-14 last season and won two playoff games before losing in the Division II-A quarterfinals to top-seeded Artesia.

Redondo returns four of the top six players from that team--point guard Ted Silva and front-court players David Cottey (6-4), Ryan Turner (6-4) and Josh Miller (6-5).

“That’s a pretty good nucleus right there,” Shaw said. “I feel the program is as strong as it’s been from top to bottom.”

Since the assistant’s job at El Camino is a part-time position, Shaw said he will continue to teach at Redondo if he is hired.
