Preston to Honor Commitment to Cal

Former Westlake High quarterback Todd Preston said Friday that he will return to summer school classes at Cal and will honor his scholarship to play football for the Bears in the fall.

Preston, who signed a letter of intent in February, had considered rejecting his scholarship when he left the school after spending four weeks attending classes this summer. He returned home July 15 and played in the Shrine All-Star football game last Saturday at the Rose Bowl.

After saying he was unhappy with the atmosphere at Berkeley, he sought employment in Westlake Village earlier this week.

“I had decided to leave because of personal reasons, but they weren’t good reasons to leave,” he said. “They weren’t as important as getting a degree is. I realize that now.”

Preston will depart for Berkeley on Sunday and will continue attending classes Monday.

“I just felt it was the best thing for me to do,” he said.

Preston passed for 5,579 career yards in his three years at Westlake, including 2,427 yards last fall.
