PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Wise Walks Out of Camp a Second Time

Share

Defensive lineman Mike Wise left the Raiders’ camp in Oxnard again Thursday to attend to personal matters, Coach Art Shell said.

When will Wise return?

“When he says he’s ready to come back,” Shell said.

Wise left camp without permission last month, then returned, saying he had grown despondent over his dying grandfather.

This time, Wise informed Shell that he was leaving.

There almost isn’t enough adhesive in the trainer’s room to mend the Raiders’ offensive line. Left guard Steve Wisniewski is still hobbled by a sprained left ankle, and right tackle Steve Wright, who had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in the off-season, requires three rolls of tape and a double knee brace to practice each day.

“I ask him every day how he’s doing,” Shell said. “He says he’s fine. They got the brace rigged to restrict his knee, to make sure he doesn’t hyper-extend the doggone thing.”

Shell doesn’t need more offensive line worries. Tuesday, he lost backup guard/center Todd Peat for six to eight weeks because of a torn left triceps. Pro Bowl center Don Mosebar remains unsigned.

One of the Raiders’ top priorities in Monday night’s exhibition game against the Dallas Cowboys in Texas is to get the first-team offense moving. The unit has managed only a field goal in two exhibition games.

“I’d like us to be a little bit more consistent,” Shell said.

In two games, starting quarterback Jay Schroeder has completed eight of 21 passes.

“People are concerned with Jay,” Shell said, “but Jay is about where he was last year in training camp. It’s no big concern. We’re doing some things with Jay, taking part of his game away, because we’re trying to do some other things.”
