Basketball League Starts Season on Sept. 8

The South Bay Basketball League will begin it fourth season Sept. 8 and is seeking community all-star or traveling teams from throughout the Southland, especially in the 11-and-under and 13-and-under age groups.

Each of the 36 teams in the league will play a 10-game schedule to be followed by a playoff tournament Nov. 17 and 24. Games are played on weekends at various South Bay high schools. CIF rules are used. Information: (213) 549-5400 days, (213) 541-4031 evenings.

Palos Verdes resident Bunmi Ogunieye, competing for the RPV/Marathom’s team, established a national meet record Aug. 2 at the ARCO Jesse Owens Games in the girls’ age 11-12 long jump with a leap of 15 feet.

The previous record of 14-10 3/4 had stood since 1988. Bunmi is the daughter of two-time Olympian Modupe Oshikoya, who presented the gold medal to her on the victory stand at Occidental College.

The American Youth Soccer Organization Region 34 (South Redondo) team recently won the boys’ 10-11 age bracket in the Mission Viejo Classic, going undefeated in five games and outscoring opponents, 25-2, including a 4-0 victory in the championship.

This team also placed second in tournaments in Chino and Lake Tahoe, both times going into overtime before losing.

Team members are Joseph Cartlidge, Trevor Clements, Matt Deirling, Jason Funes, Aaron Kogan, Matt Keach, Adam Echavarria, Matt Deminew, Eric Orchard, Anthony Chumpitaz, Brant Boston, Nick Garcia and Freddie Axelrod. The team is coached by Lang Boston and Rudy Echavarria.

A South Bay boys’ basketball team of 13-year-olds defeated Mid Valley of the San Fernando Valley, 38-36, in overtime to win the American Roundball Corp. summer league title. All games were played at North Hollywood High.

South Bay team members are David Brown, Mateo Camargo, Doug Francis, Wyatt Hage, Tremaine Mayeaux, John Ohrenberger, David Rangel and Jay Suminaga.

Harbor College Extension is offering a low-impact aerobics class from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday starting next week. The class will run seven weeks. The fee is $28. Information: (213) 518-3510.
