OUTLOOK

Golden West doesn’t return many experienced players from last season’s 5-5 team, and has been picked to finish last in the division, but Shackleford isn’t worried. “I guess I should be more pessimistic, but I like our team,” he said. “We are deeper in every position and had more guys out (127) than ever before.” Cunningham gained 290 yards at tailback last season but was hurt often. Shackleford says his team is deep enough at running back to allow Cunningham to switch to the secondary. Graf could be another in a long list of talented Golden West offensive linemen with big-time potential. Puga earned the starting spot at quarterback after beating out six others, but Shackleford said Puga still could be in better shape. Golden West’s weakest position might be at receiver, where no one has excelled yet.
