Connors Passes Into the Record Book

Share

Hart High quarterback Ryan Connors completed 30 of 58 passes (both single-game school records) in a 33-21 loss to Thousand Oaks on Friday and moved into the Southern Section record book.

Connors’ 30 completions tie him for seventh on the single-game list. Max Shubin of Mountain View, who completed 36 passes in 1980, is first. Records for attempts are not kept.

Connors has passed for 747 yards in two games, which projects to about 3,700 yards over a 10-game season and more than 4,000 yards if Hart competes in just one playoff game.

If Connors keeps up the pace, he easily will eclipse the Southern Section single-season mark of 3,437 yards set by Mike Smith of Los Altos in 1982.

Connors also would pass such notable quarterbacks as Dan McGwire of Claremont (fifth on the list with 3,172 yards in 1985), Pat Haden of Bishop Amat (sixth with 3,127 yards in 1970) and Jim Bonds of Hart (fourth with 3,196 yards in 1986).

Connors has completed 52 passes in two games. At that rate, over a 10-game schedule, he also would break the single-season sectional mark for completions (set by Smith with 252 in 1982).

If Connors breaks the record, he will owe much of his success to the offensive line.

Connors has 100 attempts and has been sacked only three times.

Offense: Reseda kicker Gerald Cohl, an All-City Section 4-A Division selection last season as a sophomore, finally missed a point-after attempt.

Cohl made three of four conversion kicks in Reseda’s 30-8 victory over Canoga Park last week, misfiring on the third attempt. Cohl, who made all 21 of his point-after kicks last season, said that he entertained thoughts of playing three seasons without a missed PAT.

“I was hoping,” he said. . . .

Thousand Oaks’ total of 407 rushing yards is 43 shy of the Lancers’ school record (450), set last season against Simi Valley. Three holding calls erased 54 yards in rushing. . . .

After two games, versatile tight end Richard Dice of Alemany already has scored twice on pass receptions, twice on two-point conversion receptions and once on a 44-yard punt return.

Mistakes: Newbury Park has turned the ball over 10 times in two games, including six during a 41-14 loss to Ventura on Friday.

Receiving: Ventura wide receiver-defensive back Elan Walshe caught seven passes for 150 yards Friday. Four (for 97 yards) were the result of passes thrown by his quarterback, Trevor Rumsey; three were interceptions. Walshe picked off three of Newbury Park quarterback Keith Smith’s passes and had 53 yards in returns.

Streaks: Canyon is off to an 0-1-1 start, but this is not the first time the Cowboys have stumbled out of the gate. In fact, Canyon started shakily two years ago before rebounding.

Canyon, which scrambled to a 14-14 tie with Notre Dame on Friday, was 0-2-1 in 1989, then won eight of its next nine. The tie was against Thousand Oaks, a team the Cowboys will meet Thursday. . . .

Cleveland, which finished 0-9-1 last season and lost its opener last weekend, has not won since the ninth game of the 1989 season.

The Cavaliers are winless in their past 12 games and 15 of their past 16.

Defense: Birmingham held University to 20 yards in total offense and two first downs. . . . Littlerock’s Kai Hampton, a junior inside linebacker, led the Lobo defense with nine tackles--eight unassisted--and one pass knockdown against Yucca Valley. . . .

Kennedy, which has shut out Narbonne and Hamilton, is off to its best start defensively since, well, last season. In 1990, Kennedy did not allow the opposition offense to score in consecutive nonleague games against Narbonne, Franklin and Crenshaw to open the season.

Offense: Highland’s Cleveland Williams has not handled the ball a lot, but he is impressive when he does: 12 carries, 182 yards, four touchdowns. . . .

Sylmar was victimized by the Big Three--mistakes, that is--in its 24-22 loss to Chatsworth last week. Sylmar, which fumbled three times, outgained Chatsworth, 294-196, but three big plays made all the difference for Chatsworth--Montay Hardison’s 90-yard kickoff return and touchdown passes of 45 and 57 yards by quarterback Brian Comer. Sylmar ran 57 offensive plays to 27 for Chatsworth.
