Crescenta Valley (2-0) vs. Burbank (2-0), Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Crescenta Valley--Which of these two stubborn defenses is going to budge? Crescenta Valley has two shutouts, a 25-0 victory over La Canada in the opener and a 21-0 shutout of Harvard-Westlake, 21-0, last week. Junior nose guard Jon Berg, a Times’ All-Glendale selection last year, leads a defensive unit that also includes ends Eric Steinlight and Chris Bogosian and linebacker Paul Lopez, all of whom started last season. Lopez, who also plays running back, scored three touchdowns against Harvard-Westlake and Jason Rountree gained 113 yards in 18 carries. Burbank shut out Hoover in its opener and did the same to Bellarmine-Jefferson last week. “They have quite a few good athletes,” Crescenta Valley Coach Jim Beckenhauer said. “They have very good size and play excellent defense. They have a good linebacker crew.”

St. Francis (2-0) vs. Notre Dame (0-1-1), Friday at Notre Dame--Just as it did in its season-opening win over Burroughs, St. Francis spotted St. Bernard a first-half lead before rallying for a 30-21 victory on Friday. The Golden Knights, under first-year Coach Andy Boynton, were led by J.D. Walters, who gained 104 yards in 27 carries and scored on runs of one and two yards. Notre Dame lost to Lynwood, 24-22, in its opener then tied Canyon, 14-14, last week. Notre Dame averages 288 yards a game on offense and gives up 283.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Glendale College (0-1) at Bakersfield College (0-1), Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at Bakersfield--This game is the Western State Conference opener for both teams. Glendale lost to Pasadena in its season-opener two weeks ago and was idle last week. The Vaqueros are still without All-WSC running back Bobby Webster, who has been slowed because of a sprained ankle and missed the game against Pasadena. Freshmen Mike McMullen from Kennedy High and Eric Keisau from Glendale are the Vaqueros’ quarterbacks. Bakersfield, which lost to Taft in the Potato Bowl last season, dropped its opener at home to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.; “They are going to be fired up,” Glendale Coach John Cicuto said of the perennially powerful Renegades. “We’re not really concerned about that. We just want to get healthy and play a lot better than we did against PCC.”

COLLEGES

Occidental College (1-0) vs. Azusa Pacific (2-1), Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Azusa Pacific--Occidental defeated Pomona-Pitzer, 31-9, in its opener last week behind the play of quarterback Derrick Williams, who passed for 239 yards and touchdown passes of 85 yards and 31 yards. The Tigers also displayed a potent running game as Brian Madlangbayan and Gary Little each rushed for 70 yards. Azusa Pacific was ranked 13th in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics poll after the Cougars beat Austin (Tex.) College, 21-19, two weeks ago. But Azusa Pacific was out gained, 402-48, in that game, and won only because its defense scored all three touchdowns. Azusa Pacific’s offense struggled last week in a 35-0 loss to Humboldt State.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Jose Rodriguez, Marshall--Rodriguez is the quarterback of the Barrister offense that Marshall Co-Coach Ken Gerard described as, “an old-fashioned run-and-shoot, double-wing.” Marshall tied Garfield in its opener and defeated Grant, 30-0, last week. Rodriguez completed nine of 12 passes for 228 yards, including touchdown pass plays of 77, 33 and 44 yards against Grant.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Derrick Williams, Occidental--Occidental has boasted a strong running attack the last few years, but Williams, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound sophomore quarterback from Los Angeles, gave the Tigers a new look in their 31-9 season-opening victory over Pomona-Pitzer. Williams, scrambling out of the pocket throughout the game, completed eight of 16 passes for 239 yards. Williams connected with Marc Kroc on an 85-yard touchdown pass play in the first quarter. Williams hooked up with Mike Bonetto on a 31-yard touchdown pass play in the fourth quarter.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Ronnie Lopez--The former Franklin High and Glendale College quarterback completed 21 of 44 passes for 314 yards, including touchdown pass plays of 49, seven and 15 yards, during Utah State’s 55-21 loss to Oklahoma at Norman, Okla., on Saturday. Lopez, a redshirt junior, also had four passes intercepted. Utah State plays defending Big West Conference-champion San Jose State Saturday at Logan, Utah.
