PREP NOTES
More double duty: Former Mater Dei soccer standout John Coggins, now at Chico State, had his duties increased when he joined the football team last week. He was enlisted as a kicker after walk-on Chad Davidson proved ineffective.
Davidson missed an extra point and two field goals from inside 35 yards in a 25-16 loss in the opener against Santa Clara.
Coggins, who graduated from Mater Dei in 1988, debuted last week against Carroll College. After Davidson missed another extra point, Coggins was brought in the next time the Wildcats scored. He made the extra point and received a standing ovation from the crowd.
That extra point made him the team’s No. 1 kicker and made for a hectic schedule. On Saturday, Coggins will play forward for the soccer team against Cal State Stanislaus at 3 p.m., then kick for the football team against UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m.
