Crescenta Valley (2-1) vs. South Pasadena (3-0), Friday at 7:30 p.m. at South Pasadena--Crescenta Valley attempts to bounce back from last week’s 17-14 loss to Burbank, during which the Falcons gave up their first points of the season. Unbeaten South Pasadena, which last week defeated El Monte, 24-21, also has victories over San Gabriel and Hoover. Crescenta Valley quarterback Aaron Schaefer completed 16 of 21 passes for 271 yards against Burbank. South Pasadena is led by quarterback Dan Withers, who has passed for 302 yards and four touchdowns, and running back Jaime Magana, who has rushed for 318 yards.

La Canada (1-2) vs. Muir (1-2), Saturday at 7:30 at La Canada--Don’t be fooled by the records of these teams. La Canada, which last week defeated Burroughs, 9-7, is a good defensive team that is better than its record indicates. The only problem for the Spartans is that Muir is much , much better than its record. Muir is led by running back Saladin McCullough, who has gained 428 yards this season. The Mustangs defeated Palmdale in its opener, then lost a close game to perennial Division I power Fontana. Last week the Mustangs lost to Eisenhower--ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today--40-20. La Canada could benefit if Muir is looking past the Spartans to next week’s game against Bishop Amat.

COLLEGES

Occidental College (2-0) vs. Claremont (0-3), Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Claremont--Neither coach will acknowledge it, but this Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game should be an easy victory for Occidental. Occidental and Claremont rank first and second in the league in passing, but that is a misleading statistic for Claremont because the Stags are always playing catch-up. Occidental quarterback Derrick Williams has passed for 326 yards and five touchdowns and no interceptions in two games. In three games, Claremont quarterback Darren Gonzalez has passed for 426 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions. Last week the Occidental defense forced seven turnovers in a 19-14 victory over Azusa Pacific. Claremont was routed by defending SCIAC champion Redlands, 44-3.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Pathon Rucker, Glendale--Rucker, The Times’ Glendale Back of the Year

in 1990, looks as if he is fully recovered from a shoulder injury he sustained in the Dynamiters’ season-opening loss to Alhambra. On Saturday, Rucker rushed for 145 yards in 16 carries and scored touchdowns on runs of five, 65, eight and 11

yards as Glendale defeated Bellarmine-Jefferson, 42-0. He also scored a two-point conversion.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Kelly Bynum, Occidental--Occidental Coach Dale Widolff says the school does not keep statistics for individual tackles because he wants to foster a team concept for the Tiger defensive unit. But with the graduation of all-conference defensive lineman Brady Dargan, Bynum has taken on more of a leadership role. Bynum, a 5-foot-9, 195-pound senior nose guard from Boulder, Colo., was a standout in Saturday’s 19-14 victory over Azusa Pacific. Occidental forced seven turnovers, including four interceptions. Bynum was also instrumental in Occidental’s season-opening victory over Pomona Pitzer. Bynum, a bio-chemistry major, has a 3.54 grade-point average.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Mark McMillian--The former Glendale College defensive back made three tackles and broke up a pass play Saturday for Alabama as the Crimson Tide defeated Vanderbilt, 48-17. McMillian a 5-8, 160-pound senior who played at Kennedy High in Granada Hills, has 10 tackles this season for the Crimson Tide, which plays host to Tennessee-Chattanooga Saturday at Birmingham, Ala.
