SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

After frittering away three scoring opportunities in the second quarter, St. Bonaventure High breezed to a 33-0 nonleague victory over Calabasas on Thursday night at Ventura High.

The Seraphs took advantage of big plays to improve to 2-2.

Tight end Toby Zwicker took a quick pass from quarterback Peter Houston and raced 39 yards for a touchdown on the final play from scrimmage in the first half to give St. Bonaventure a 14-0 halftime lead.

Gino Nucci swooped down the left sideline 75 yards for a touchdown on the second-half kickoff as the Seraphs increased their lead to 20-0.

A fumbled snap by Calabasas punter Dusty Nabor and big hits from St. Bonaventure’s Jose Payan and Marc Romero gave the Seraphs another chance from the Coyote 26.

Four plays later, Toby Noblin slammed into the end zone for his second touchdown run as St. Bonaventure extended its third-quarter lead to 27-0.

A 25-yard return by Nucci, this time on a punt, set up a final Seraph score. R.J. Kisling rumbled into the end zone from 19 yards on the next play as St. Bonaventure capped a 19-point third quarter.

Fortified by a fine defensive effort, led by linebackers Payan, Romero and Tim Lawson and defensive back Nucci, the Seraphs were content to run out the clock in the fourth quarter.

Calabasas was virtually tied in knots in the first half as the tough Seraph defense held the Coyotes (2-2) to one first down.

The Seraphs scored their first touchdown on their initial possession as Noblin ran one yard for a touchdown to cap a 46-yard drive. Noblin set up the score with a 31-yard run. St. Bonaventure spent most of the first half in Calabasas territory but had trouble scoring. The Seraphs wound up squandering a scoring chance when Noblin fumbled into the end zone.

Noblin had set up the Seraphs with a first and goal at the four when he beat a two-man inside blitz from the Coyotes for a 43-yard scamper up the sidelines.

But two plays later from the three, he lost the ball on a hit by Tom Kim just before crossing the goal line. Jeff Reiman pounced on the ball in a crowded end zone to give Calabasas possession.

A second-quarter threat died at the Coyote 23 when the Seraphs ran out of downs, and still another opportunity ended on a missed 46-yard field goal by Andrew Wurtz later in the quarter.
