Canyon High scored 28 points in the second quarter en route to a 42-9 victory over previously unbeaten Burbank in a nonleague game Friday night at Burroughs High.

By halftime, it was no contest, as the Cowboys (2-1-1) took a 35-3 lead behind 10 first downs and 207 yards. Members of the Cowboy entourage could be heard mumbling about running clocks and Dodger updates.

A vicious Cowboy defense--led by senior nose tackle Chuck Osborne, who made one ballcarrier’s mouthpiece fly with a hard tackle--smothered the Bulldogs (3-1), limiting them to 49 yards in total offense in the first half--33 on a quarterback scamper by Bryon Linville that accounted for Burbank’s lone first down of the half and set up a 40-yard field goal by Alfonso Velasco.

On its second possession, Canyon fielded a punt and rolled 37 yards for its first score, a 21-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chad Engbrecht (17 attempts, 10 completions, two touchdowns, no interceptions) to senior Chris Spahr.

Tailback Ed Williams added touchdown runs of three, four and five yards. After the Burbank field goal, Engbrecht hit fullback Andy Cleland with a 13-yard touchdown pass. Williams finished with a game-high 125 yards in 18 carries. Cleland added 55 yards in 10 carries. Canyon totaled 378 yards to Burbank’s 167.

Linville, who completed 10 of 12 mostly short passes for 88 yards, engineered the Bulldogs’ only touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, a seven-play, 61-yard march that he capped with a one-yard plunge for a touchdown. Along the way, Linville had completions of 25 and 12 yards.
