The El Camino Real High girls’ volleyball team moved into a tie for first place with Chatsworth in the West Valley League on Wednesday night by thumping the Chancellors, 15-11, 15-10, 11-15, 15-10.
El Camino Real sophomore middle blocker Jessica Dinaberg notched 13 kills in the first game to give the visiting Conquistadores (7-2, 5-1 in league play) a strong start.
Dinaberg finished with 27 kills, three blocks, two assists and an ace to lead El Camino Real. Also helping El Camino Real’s cause was setter Heather Allen, who directed the attack with 40 assists in what Conquistadore Coach Lori Chandler said was Allen’s best match of the season.
In a Sept. 30 match between the teams, the Conquistadores defeated visiting Chatsworth in the first game, but the Chancellors came back to win three consecutive games and the match.
“The difference between this match and the first match is that we kept our momentum,” Allen said. “We took charge from the beginning.”
After winning the first two games behind Dinaberg’s hitting and consistent play from the rest of the team, El Camino Real got a scare when Chatsworth (7-2, 5-1) took a 7-1 lead in game three and held on to win.
But the Conquistadores took control midway through the fourth game as Allen recorded two aces in a six-point run that gave El Camino Real an 11-6 lead. Dinaberg then closed it out with a kill.
“Execution was the difference,” Chandler said. “We played the kind of ball we should be playing. Mentally, we stayed in the match the duration.”
