Corona del Mar Ties Woodbridge, Misses Chance to Win

Tom Hess kicked a 21-yard field goal with 3 minutes 31 seconds remaining to give Corona del Mar a 20-20 tie with Woodbridge in a Sea View League game Friday night at Irvine Stadium.

Corona del Mar (2-4-2, 0-2-1 league) had an excellent chance to win in the final minute. After a 16-yard punt, the Sea Kings got the ball back on the Warrior 20 with 57 seconds remaining and eventually worked the ball to the 10.

But Hess’ 27-yard field goal was wide left, giving Woodbridge possession with 22 seconds to go. The Warriors tried four pass plays, but all fell incomplete.

Woodbridge (4-2-1, 1-1-1) had taken a 20-17 lead with 8:17 remaining when Billy Atkinson scored from two yards out, and quarterback James Wyatt ran in for the two-point conversion.

The Sea Kings led, 17-12, with 9:04 left in the third quarter when Hess scored from 22 yards out. A one-yard touchdown run by Glen Edwards with 2:06 left in the second quarter gave Woodbridge a 12-10 lead.

Hess hit a 19-yard field goal with 9:31 left in the second quarter to put the Sea Kings ahead, 10-6.

Edwards rushed for 140 yards on 18 carries, while Hess ran for 75 yards on 18. Wyatt completed 12 of 28 passes for 153 yards, while Corona del Mar quarterback Matt Evans completed seven of 16 for 62 yards.
