In another Northern Division game:
Santa Barbara City 41, Ventura 21--Sophomore quarterback Poncho Renteria completed 16 of 36 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score to lead the Vaqueros to victory at Ventura High.
Ventura scored first on a bizarre punt return. Shawn Young fielded the kick at his own 30 and raced up the sideline before he ran head-on into Santa Barbara punter Don Ballard. The ball popped loose but took a one-hop bounce back into Young’s hands and the Ventura return specialist scooted the final 30 yards into the end zone untouched for a 7-0 lead.
Three minutes later, Santa Barbara (6-1, 5-1 in conference play) scored on a 74-yard punt return by Paul Perkins.
After the teams again traded touchdowns, Renteria unloaded touchdown passes of 39- and six yards to wide receiver Scott Arnold to open a 27-14 Santa Barbara lead.
Ventura’s Matt Brimigion completed 17 of 38 for 238 yards and a touchdown in a losing cause.
