HIGH SCHOOL CROSS-COUNTRY ROUNDUP : SOUTHERN SECTION LEAGUE FINALS

Marmonte League--Defending state Division I champion Agoura placed five runners among the top seven finishers, including a sweep of the first four places, to win its second consecutive league girls’ title with 17 points at Moorpark College. Westlake (80) and Simi Valley (89) were second and third.

The top six individuals and top three teams from the league finals advance to the Southern Section preliminaries Nov. 16 at Mt. San Antonio College.

Agoura sophomore Kay Nekota and Newbury Park senior Jeff Wilson won individual titles in runaways. Nekota timed 17:57 for the three-mile course to the 18:22 of teammate and runner-up Laura Hayward. Wilson clocked 14:53 and Agoura’s Ryan Wilson finished second in 15:18.

Ryan Wilson’s effort helped the defending Southern Section Division II champion Chargers nip Newbury Park, 61-68, for the team title. Thousand Oaks (72) was third.

Channel League--The Buena boys’ team sealed its sixth league title in the past nine years and the Bulldog girls’ team claimed its ninth consecutive championship with league-meet wins at College Park in Oxnard.

The Buena boys placed five runners among the top 10 to easily outscore Rio Mesa, 31-68.

Buena’s Steve Hails and Dave Guenther both ran 15:32 to finish fourth and fifth. San Marcos’ Todd Tressler won in 15:00.

Oxnard sophomore Gabriella Rodriguez won the three-mile race in 18:01. Buena went 5-6-7-8 to beat rival Rio Mesa, 39-69. Megan Ellis placed fifth in 18:57 to pace the Bulldogs.

Frontier League--The Nordhoff boys and Fillmore girls, the top-ranked teams in the state Division IV, dominated the meet at Paramount Ranch. Nordhoff grabbed five of the top six places and Fillmore finished 1-2-3.

The Ranger boys totaled a near-perfect 16 points to Fillmore’s 44 and Santa Paula’s 69. Jesse Moore won the individual title in 16:37 and was followed by teammates Will Johnson (second in 16:41), Javier Ramirez (third, 16:47) and John McLean (fourth, 16:48).

Fillmore, however, was almost upset by defending state Division IV champion Nordhoff. The Rangers got a boost when all five scorers placed fifth through ninth. Fillmore held on for a 28-35 win as junior Maribella Aparicio finished first in 19:12, Nikki Shaw was second in 20:02 and Marta Torres third in 20:04.

Mission League Finals--Mike Yomtob timed a winning 16:44 over the three-mile course at La Mirada Park to lead Alemany to its first victory in a boys’ league final since 1981. The Indians placed five runners in the top 13 to total 44 points. St. Paul finished second with 57 points, followed by Bishop Montgomery and Notre Dame, with 58 points each.

Amy Gough of Notre Dame was the top local finisher in the girls’ race, placing fifth with a time of 20:14 over the three-mile course.

Pacific League--Crescenta Valley High administrators postponed the league finals at Crescenta Valley Park because of a first-stage smog alert declared for the area by the South Coast Air Quality Management District.
