Sport: Tennis

Position: No. 1 singles

Class: Junior

Asmuss, who is ranked in the top 10 in Southern California in the USTA 16s, has been No. 1 in the Angelus League two years running. For the second consecutive season, she didn’t lose a set in the regular season and won the league’s individual title. “It’s very reassuring, we can always count on her to bring in three wins for us,” Mater Dei Coach Sharon Kennedy said. “It’s her mental game. She plays against opponents who have as many shots as she does, but she has the mental ability to stay focused. She’s a tough competitor. She wants to win and that’s it.” In the first two rounds of the Southern Section playoffs last week, Asmuss dominated her competition. She didn’t lose a game in a 15-3 victory over Hemet or a 16-2 victory over Long Beach Millikan. Mater Dei, seeded fourth in Division 2-A, also benefits from the undefeated doubles team of Trisha Abe and Kim Conter, which swept its sets last week.

Other top performers:

Becky Gehlke, who had 20 kills in Mater Dei’s five-game victory over Ventura in the first round of the Division 5-A volleyball playoffs.

Carrie Garritson, a Sunny Hills cross-country runner who won the Southern Section preliminary II-AA race, completing three miles at Mt. San Antonio College in 17 minutes 58.2 seconds.
